It started with Hanna, a creative and talented Norwegian woman living in Denmark, who wanted to bring the warmth, functionality, and design flair of Nordic 'almue', or 'folk', décor to her newfound home, and to the many tourists visiting from other countries. In the 1960's, she opened a boutique in the center of the charming Danish city of Arhus, called Norsk Almue. With the help of her husband, Erik, and her elder daughter Wenja, Norsk Almue became a landmark in the business center of Arhus.
A decade later, her younger daughter Karin continued the concept in her now home in Westchester, New York, with a retail store, Almue Stuen, that offered Scandinavian gifts, clothing and home décor. Over time, she expanded the business to include antiques from Scandinavia, Russia and Continental Europe, as well as interior decorating services. Eventually, with stores first on Madison Avenue and then in Westchester, NY, Danish & European Antiques--as the business came to be called-made the classical grace and beauty of 19th century European aesthetics accessible to a wide variety of clientele, many of whom returned often to pick up another cherished piece. Items were also offered through Center 44 in Manhattan and Harborview Center for Antiques in CT. In 2010, after many wonderful years, the business closed.
In 2016 Karin's daughter Pia opened Sophia Rose Antik New York LLC and in 2018 Sophia Rose Interiors New York was established.
